I really dont understand what is happening here in Qld. It seems like every road we have travelled on, has been full of roadworks. But that isn't really my big concern. The way the roads are being repaired, is leaving no spaces at the side of the road at all, the roads just slope away very steeply at the edges. Looks like they are thinking of drainage, but heck what happens of you have to get out of the way of a wide load? I can see a lot of caravan roll overs happening here, no room for human error at all. Scary stuff.

I think that they are doing the best they can with limited finances. Our son does contract work for Road Tek & the situation is not going to improve. There are not many contracts being taken in the near future. Having just come down the Bruce from Townsville & the works that are still being done to repair flood damage is a lot of KLMS. There are more passing blanes being incorporated in the works. Yes there are side drop offs but the roads are also being widened - we met a couple of very wide loads on one of these road work sections with no problem.

We are on the Capricorn Highway, currently at Emerald and heading to Longreach and Winton. There are absolutely no ways to safety in many of the edges where we are driving. We had a wide load today that was so wide the coppers had our lane totally blocked and we had to get right off the road. Thankfully we had some safe room to get out of the way. On many stretches of one lane each way traffic, there is just no way off the blacktop it is sloped so sharply that the van would be totalled if we moved off the road. This is roadtrain country and we are definitely being as safe and sensible as we can, but the roads are meant to be designed for safety too.

Gotcha right there Mick. The truckies are so polite out here. We have rarely heard bad language on the radio and so far we are listening very carefully. we are finding that generally the truckies with road trains are sensible and not cowboys, so we are being careful to keep out of their way, after all we are on holidays and they are working. We can share the road, just not happy about the drops at the side of some roads.
