30th Anniversary of Ash Wednesday Bushfires SA & Victoria
February 16, 2013
The 30th Anniversary of the Ash Wednesday bushfires that swept through parts of South Australia and Victoria is being commemorated on 16 February 2013.
The Ash Wednesday bushfires were among the worst to ever be experienced in Australia's history, causing widespread devastation across South Australia and Victoria.
75 people lost their lives that day – 28 from South Australia and 47 from Victoria.
Of those who died in South Australia, three were CFS firefighters.
The Ash Wednesday bushfires left a trail of destruction as they burnt through 158,938 hectares across SA.
More than 380 houses were seriously damaged or destroyed, and over 250,000 livestock were lost in South Australia.
30 years on, the horror experienced on this day is still etched into the minds of many.
This 30th Anniversary not only allows us to reflect on the devastation of Ash Wednesday, but it reminds us of the bravery of all firefighters that have lost their lives in service, protecting our communities.
In recognition of this sacrifice, a Memorial Service is being held on Saturday 16 February 2013 at 6.00pm to coincide with the 30th Anniversary of Ash Wednesday.
The service is being held at the Mount Lofty Summit, hosted by CFS Region 1.
On behalf of CEO Mick Bourke and Chief Officer Euan Ferguson,(ex SACFS CEO) the following invitation is extended to all CFA members.
The summer fire season is a busy time for all CFA members, it’s a time when mother nature traditionally puts us to the test; but we should also take time to remember past actions.
In 2013, we acknowledge and remember our fallen firefighters who have given so much in service to their communities and to CFA, particularly those who died 30 years ago during the devastating Ash Wednesday fires.
To commemorate our fallen heroes, all members are welcome to join our CFA Patron, the Governor of Victoria His Excellency The Honourable Alex Chernov AC QC at a special CFA Remembrance Service to be held on:
Sunday, 17 February 2013 commencing at 5pm St John’s Anglican Church 1 St Georges Road, Upper Beaconsfield (Cnr Beaconsfield / Emerald Road and St Georges Road)
