Anyone who has travelled through Queensland will know what this is all about. While there is hundreds of roadworks projects in progress across the state, not just the metro or near-country regions, they still get it wrong. They insist on building roads with no shoulder. They may give us a wide shoulder of tarmac outside the fog line, there is still nothing beyond the fog line but a long drop into oblivion. Today on one of the motorways was a Landcruiser still hitched to the horse float which went down the culvert, a...se first. It was only good luck which stopped the whole configuration rolling down the non-existent "shoulder". Some roads don't even have the little bit of shoulder outside the fog line. I can tell you it takes some juggling to pass another oversize. We were 5 metres, they were 2 @ 8 metres. One set of bogies off the black top very carefully, as the load was top-heavy. The 8's stopped as we squeezed passed. There is just no easy way to do it. Please, please, please be careful whether you're towing or not. Just take all due care so we can see you here again. 11_12_13
Cruisin Granny, we have travelled on Qld roads with those almost non existent shoulders, and it terrified us both. If you have some dash camera footage of these incidents, do you think it could benefit our safety, if you sent some footage to the national press? There really should be a national standard set, for the width of road left for exactly those OD loads that are so prevalent in Qld. Thanks for bringing this topic up to the top again.

Just get out there on the road as often as you can folks
Unfortunately Qld makes it's own rules, depending on the budget on the day. While they now allow a bit more tarmac outside the fog line in some places, there is still no dirt should beyond the edge of the black. The road gangs are rebuilding roads which have been washed out by the floods, but they still don't allow for a dirt shoulder. Just keep it safe and bear that edge in mind. Safe and happy travels.
We spent a month travelling Victoria's back roads......sure they have 5ft wide dirt beyond the black....but the black is only one car width......not much fun when a semi..coming towards you....you try and pull off.only to sink in the stinky.and I mean stinky sticky mud...barricades.on one windy road were only white painted car tyres
