Last year heading home from harvest with my van in tow and my wife behind in my work ute , we were travelling at about 90kph with about a 1k gap between the 2 vehicles .About 10k north of Snowtown my wife told me via the UHF that there was a truck behind us , knowing there was an overtaking lane about 4k up the road I said to her stay there till the overtaking lane then close up and I will slow to get him past .
Next thing I heard on the UHF was "How much road does he need ?" from my wife . When the truck overtook me he made a deliberate attempt to run me off the road and had done the same to my wife . I called him on 40 and asked what the hell he was upto and got a stream of abuse back about holding him up for all of 1 minute .
Now what to do in this situation :
First dont panic and stab the brakes . Lift the foot and slow down and move slowly to the left , if you are forced off the bitumen dont swerve back as soon as you can , instead slow more and gently steer back onto the bitumen . While this is all happening get you passenger to write down a brief description of the truck and trailer , any company name on the prime mover and the registration number of the prime mover and trailer , then report it to the Police on 000 and be prepared to make a statement and go to court . If you have a dashcam save the footage to show the Police .
While I am also a truckie I hate this sort of behaviour by braindead idiots . I tow at between 80 to 90kph and try to get trucks past as safely and quickly as I can . They are working while I am on holiday .
Travelling still Always will
WARNING: Using Towballs for recoveries can and do kill people and damage property
I'm always surprised at the ones that sit right up our rear end and swerve out to overtake the minute they get a chance. We tow at between 95-100 and have been overtaken doing 100!
Yes Tess, some of them are just beyond comprehension. As if doing 5kmh less than the speed limit for ten minutes is going to make a marked difference to the day's travel! Yeah, I drive the big ones sometimes but my patience is greater than that scenario.

It is certainly only a few that are like that, Thankfully most of the drivers we have encountered have been good even to the point that when they are coming towards me they have moved to the left of the road to lessen the wind buffer as we pass
but you're right tha cowboys have to be reported to the police

We had a scary one yesterday.....we were heading north on South Road....stopped at red light at Seaford road ......a white tour bus like Frank drives heading south was stopped at traffic lights..when the lights turned green..to proceed ahead.. I and all the other lane drivers immediately started moving forward..then all the sudden the bus took off turning its right into Seaford Road with a red arrow.....we blasted our horns and got a finger up .....what was the idiot doing....he could have squashed many vehicles..I dont know if he had passengers but I bet they were sh*tting themselves about 9:30ish in morning

Dave PM sent
On Friday I was coming back from town with a group of kids on board and I had a truck driver try to take out one of the mirrors on the bus.
He had a big bar around his mirrors and had lined up mine, I realised at the last minute, and was only able to move left a little because there was a car in the turning lane beside me, but it was enough for him to miss the mirror by a bee's di .............. errrr dog's whisker.
apparently it's a new sport amongst cowboys, take out the bus mirrors

The I'd be making a ''slider bar '' over the top of my mirror with a hook on it. Hit my mirror and yours will slide past till it gets to the hook, and OFF with Yours .\!

Good advice I recently well Oct last year, had a hairy incident towing a small trailer at 100KMPH in a 100K zone coming into Melbourne off the freeway. i had stayed left all the way from Bright and allowed people to pass without adieu. Yet just before and then turning to the Western Ring road a truckie in a huge rig tailgated me and I mean tailgated he was only a very few feet behind the trailer and actually looking down.
Total M..on lucky I have many many years driving experience in all types of driving conditions. If it was an inexperienced driver with a small family say there could/ almost would have been a horrific accident.Unfortunately i couldnt get his credentials or company logo etc But I hope if he sees this hell wake up to himself.
By any measure perceived or not he had no right to do what he did. Had we been walking he would now be in hospital after trying to intimidate/try his best to cause harm like that. He is safe though as he was locked in a fast moving big rig.

Yes South road has become a real problem since the Dingley Bypass was opened. Drivers are traveling fast and nasty with complete disregard to others. No one wants to slow, give way and change lanes instantly with many flying up the inside lane to then slam-merge when they encounter the "many" parked cars.
To everyone on South road both trucks and cars "Slow down! its not a freeway just a feeder road".
