Sitting relaxing at home with a drink when my Oversize pilot mate calls in . In the course of the conversation this came up regarding the use of UHF between the OS pilot and caravan .
OS p : Copy in the caravan behind the OS .
Caravan : Silence
OS P : Copy in the caravan behind the OS
Caravan: Silence
OS P Copy in the caravan behind the OS
Caravan (after about 30 seconds ) You calling me mate .?
OS P Yes mate I will let you know when you can get around .
Caravan : No answer .
1 minute later
OS P You can come around now in the caravan .
Caravan Silence
1.5 minutes later
OS P Copy in the van , you can come around now .
Caravan : You mean me do you mate ? Can I go now ?
The above conversation took place between Camooweal and Mt Isa with 2, 6m wide loads under police escort .
Why the bloody hell do you have UHF in your flash 4wd if you dont use it ? Why dont you use it and get comfortable using the UHF ? This is 1 conversation of thousands that happen every day between OS Pilots or truck and caravans .
The UHF is a valuable item in your safety arsenal , it is not the be all and end all , but it gives you information of whats is going on ahead of you on the road .
PLEASE STAY ON CHANNEL 40 and reply when called promptly . It can save you life .

There are a few repeater channels up there Mick . Some people probably scan cant remember any . Been 3 years since i did a trip in a truck up that way .
According to google both the Bruce and Pacific are 29, I still found plenty of chatter on 40 when we did a bit of the Bruce up the northern end just recently though.

Even on 29 on the Pacific, you don't get much talk. I seem to find more info on 40 North of Sydney, so its kind of very confusing (to say the least). We had a farmer warn us that his prize bull was out on the road, last trip, at Wee Waa. It was an interesting chat, but at least we knew to slow down and watch out for the big hunk of steak. He was frightened of us too, so no probs.

Just get out there on the road as often as you can folks
Haven't listened for years but the foul language and waa-waa-waa was enough to make me turn off. I agree that it can be useful with road info etc but the rest was inane rubbish. Maybe it's different these days.
Unfortunately we only turn it on when absolutely necessary. The language and absolute drivel had us turning it off so the daughter didn't get an eye opening education.
I was talking about the country, mousey. Guess you city slickers have your hands full of gear levers and indicators....not to mention hand on horn (Warning device ) to warn all the idiot drivers.

We only turn it on when on the open road or when the van is following us. The garbage soon stops once out of any city limits and the professional drivers can be very interesting and helpful. The stooopid ones are still there, but not as bad/obscene as the city.

It certainly makes a lot more sense to just use channel 40 universally around the country. I reckon it would be far too confusing and therefore less safe, to have a different channel for various roads. And it appears that most truckies think so too.
BTW, is it truckies or truckers?
I know better than to call TgjuLPYS0xjcoFyWwzLiand bikies.

Gerry 29 is used on the Pacific because there was a lot of bleed over from the New England Hwy in a lot of areas because of the height of a lot of the NEH
