Correct me if I'm wrong, but the plate would have constricted the airflow causing a very "dirty" flame, as seen by the soot all over the place behind the heater.

Dave, mine definitely sends me notifications. For those who don't, it's most likely they have 'push notifications' turned off on their particular phone or they haven't allowed specific apps to send messages to their phone.
It actually sent me one 12 hours ago, I think for the grass fire near Jabuk. I don't know of any other app that will notify so I'll have to stick with it as well as to keep an eye on the web sites.

Gerry....take my advice don't rely on it....so many have not got the notifications even in set up zones
No, I don't. It's not real intuitive to set up and some of the comments indicate that maybe it wasn't set up correctly. Might increase my zone and see what it does.

I did see that one, which is developed by NSW. The one that shows all of Australia doesn't allow you to pick a notification zone and reviews tell me that outside of NSW the info is very slow and basic. So probably not the best for where we are.

Ok, I have just found an app called Alert SA and it actually looks pretty good. It gives you a map view of all fires and allows you to set up to 10 'Alert Zones' for automatic alerts just for those areas, via the phone. It's produced by the SA Fire & Emergency Services Commission.
Yesterday there was a grass fire north of Coonalpyn and heading towards our friend's place in Jabuk. We are about 35 minutes north of them and could smell the smoke.
All's good now and under control, but it's something one would like to know about early and keep an eye on. So I thought I'd look for a phone app that would give me incident reports nearby. The SA CFS used to have a good app, but in their own words when I enquired about it not working, I was told that it is no longer supported... Budget cuts??? Who knows.
Most other States have really good apps, like 'Fires Near Me' etc. The only thing I could find was an email notification, so I subscribed. Yep, it worked... every 15 minutes throughout the night to give me updates of fires in Adelaide and all over the bloody State! Needless to say, I am now unsubscribed.
Maybe Smokey may have a solution, but I only want to be warned about fires that may directly affect me, not someone in Ceduna! Why is it that SA seems to be well behind again, especially seeing that they used to have an app that worked well years ago?
Gotta go now, my soapbox is on fire...

As a trainer for the SA 4WD Association (in a previous life), our 4WD Club set up an experiment with a snatch strap and a recovery type shackle whereby the shackle would "break away" under full stretch of the strap. We set up a sheet of corrugated iron, backed by two layers of 1/2 inch plywood at the other end. The shackle and strap punched clean through them like they weren't there and came to rest the full length of the strap at the other end!!! I recall the Landcruiser Club (I think?) did a similar experiment with similar results - Mr J would probably recall this as well?
It was bloody scary and really made us realise the enormous energy these straps can release. And if you are in the way, then you have a real big problem! And please do not think that a simple air damper over the strap will protect you - IT WON"T, they do absolutely nothing! The ONLY thing that arrested and stopped the strap in our experiments was two steel drag chains securely tied to the strap at 1/3 & 2/3 distance - nothing else worked at all!
So folks, PLEASE be careful and STOP, ASSESS and THINK seriously about how and when to use a snatch strap and if you do, keep all the rubber-neckers at a very safe distance..
Herewith endeth the lecture...

I have heard of several people having this problem, surely they could make the shaft a tad longer. The dial doesn't stick out much so a bit more wouldn't hurt.
No problems with mine though.
Hugo, it was some obscure legal thing that pissed him off as well cos he wasn't able to change it. There must be some standard to do with electric brakes or something???

That's actually interesting mr J. I had a similar issue when I fitted mine and spoke with one of their techos who was aware of the issue. It's to do with the thickness of the dash material. There was a reason why there was a thickness limit bit I can't remember what it was.

Bloody brilliant mate! I replaced a Teko sha P3 with one and it pulls the van up much better. The other good thing is that the control is one little knob that sits in the dash somewhere - no bulky box near your knee. Had mine in two cars now and wouldn't use anything else.
I will confess to knowing the owner of Redarc, but having been through his state of the art factory and knowing his business philosophy, only further supports my view on the quality of product and customer support.

Came down through there yesterday coming home. You could certainly see where the fires went through... hay bales were just small black lumps scattered through the paddocks. The paddocks themselves were almost all dirt with very little else left on the ground - must've been really ferocious for everything to be blown away like that. There were a few veeerrrry lucky escapes along the way with burnt trees and paddocks right up to the houses. Not so lucky for some though unfortunately.
Makes you really feel for those that lost their lives, property and stock. Really sad, emotional stuff when you see it first hand like that.

Saunders Gorge under threat again Dave? They only just managed to get out of it last time and save the home and restaurant. But they did lose the old wooden wagon which was near their entrance - all that was left was the old steel tyres!
Hopefully they've got their fire plan well established and rehearsed this time.

It certainly makes a lot more sense to just use channel 40 universally around the country. I reckon it would be far too confusing and therefore less safe, to have a different channel for various roads. And it appears that most truckies think so too.
BTW, is it truckies or truckers?
I know better than to call TgjuLPYS0xjcoFyWwzLiand bikies.

I too have a cover for the vent, but will ONLY use it while travelling dirt roads to keep the dust out and ONLY when the gas is turned off at the bottles.

According to google both the Bruce and Pacific are 29, I still found plenty of chatter on 40 when we did a bit of the Bruce up the northern end just recently though.
