The photo below (photo missing) shows a ventilation grill blocked by newspaper in an older style caravan. The owner / occupier blocked the door vents to minimise heat loss while he was living in the van during the cold winter evenings. He operated the cooker burners to heat the caravan; the air was slowly consumed and the occupant died as a result of a toxic build-up of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and a lack of oxygen. Note: cookers must not be used for comfort heating. Caravan dealers have stickers available to warn against this.

I really think some common sense is a useful asset. I too have covered the door vents to help with the warmth aspect BUT if needing to use gas for cooking I open up the whole door and I use the rangehood fan thingy as well. If I needed to use the fridge on gas, I really think it would be smart to unblock the door vent overnight. As I said, common sense is a very useful asset!

Just get out there on the road as often as you can folks
I too have a cover for the vent, but will ONLY use it while travelling dirt roads to keep the dust out and ONLY when the gas is turned off at the bottles.

Spook freaks when I say this, but we use a small gas heater in the van, but we always have all 4 vent open across the top, and never block off the vents at the bottom of the door or behind the fridge
PS we never use it while sleeping, only in the evening and early morning

would it be safer to get a diesel heater installed frank,
if we do free camping we wont have any heating ,but just pick the right time of year
though I could always jump in bed as my doona is a continental(down) one and very very snuggly ,but then john could always join me for extra warmth , ha ha
