Could we have the brand of van please?
My Jayco has a SMEV branded cooker, so I think it should be fine, but as we are always on the lookout for an update to the van, it would be a good thing to watch out for in any future vans.

Scary stuff Dave, thanks for sharing. We have underground coal mines all around us and this is a constant threat/concern in our neighbourhood. It was interesting to hear how the firies plan the attack.

I really think some common sense is a useful asset. I too have covered the door vents to help with the warmth aspect BUT if needing to use gas for cooking I open up the whole door and I use the rangehood fan thingy as well. If I needed to use the fridge on gas, I really think it would be smart to unblock the door vent overnight. As I said, common sense is a very useful asset!

We only turn it on when on the open road or when the van is following us. The garbage soon stops once out of any city limits and the professional drivers can be very interesting and helpful. The stooopid ones are still there, but not as bad/obscene as the city.

Even on 29 on the Pacific, you don't get much talk. I seem to find more info on 40 North of Sydney, so its kind of very confusing (to say the least). We had a farmer warn us that his prize bull was out on the road, last trip, at Wee Waa. It was an interesting chat, but at least we knew to slow down and watch out for the big hunk of steak. He was frightened of us too, so no probs.

That is still a worry for you Rainy. Lets hope the dragon is totally tamed asap.
Our last huge fire drama was caused by a fire left to burn itself out in a mine, so I am very suspicious of all mining incidents now. Never trust a pollie or a mine company is becoming one of my more serious thoughts. 36_2_51

I didn't explain that very well, we only have one road, the same one for going in or out. Some of our neighbours have yachts, that doesn't give me a vote for safely evacuating in a crappy little yacht, and our canoe is just a wee bit small to fit in the crate of photo albums! Don't quite know what sort of boat we will get, but research is being done by HWMBO. Of course there are quite a few people with boats in the hood, but they probably would expect to use them to save themselves and their families. A lot of the local houses are holiday homes, so often nobody there to help.
Fortunately the thick bush is not on the peninsula, but it surrounds the road in. So we are at the mercy of any fire really.
I am starting to see your point about not allowing homes in heavy bushland, but we have a bloody great big power station at the start of our town.

Agreed with you Rainy. This experience has really rattled us, it was so very close and the reality is that we only have one road in and out. The rest is surrounded by water. We have made a decision to start seriously looking for a boat... not quite in the market for an ark, but we do have to take care of ourselves and our neighbours in these times. I will quote the Catho Pub publican and his big sign out the front that says:
GOD BLESS THE RFS

Chris, thank you so much for giving us better safety edumication. I don't really know about other vanners, but we don't really use our radio because it is soo static ridden that it is next to impossible, until you are right up to the speaker. Yes I have asked for a more intelligent aerial (it is coming very soon, I am told) and hopefully that will help our issues and we will be better road users. Maybe other vanners have similar issues with el cheapo aerials that are sold with the radios and lousy reception.

Cruisin Granny, we have travelled on Qld roads with those almost non existent shoulders, and it terrified us both. If you have some dash camera footage of these incidents, do you think it could benefit our safety, if you sent some footage to the national press? There really should be a national standard set, for the width of road left for exactly those OD loads that are so prevalent in Qld. Thanks for bringing this topic up to the top again.

OOHHH thinking of ya Rainy, stay safe whatever you choose to do. Our news tonight showed some pretty severe fires in your area and I thought of you and John straight away. I agree with Alan, get those cars washed as soon as you can.
Stay safe xxx

Thanks for the update Dave. My home is just across the bay from the Wyee fires, so we were very interested to keep informed. We rang the neighbours last night to find that our whole town had been severely affected by smoke, but even scarier was that the town was totally cut off by the road closures, so no going in or out for a while. Makes us very grateful for the local fireys.

Gotcha right there Mick. The truckies are so polite out here. We have rarely heard bad language on the radio and so far we are listening very carefully. we are finding that generally the truckies with road trains are sensible and not cowboys, so we are being careful to keep out of their way, after all we are on holidays and they are working. We can share the road, just not happy about the drops at the side of some roads.

We are on the Capricorn Highway, currently at Emerald and heading to Longreach and Winton. There are absolutely no ways to safety in many of the edges where we are driving. We had a wide load today that was so wide the coppers had our lane totally blocked and we had to get right off the road. Thankfully we had some safe room to get out of the way. On many stretches of one lane each way traffic, there is just no way off the blacktop it is sloped so sharply that the van would be totalled if we moved off the road. This is roadtrain country and we are definitely being as safe and sensible as we can, but the roads are meant to be designed for safety too.

I really dont understand what is happening here in Qld. It seems like every road we have travelled on, has been full of roadworks. But that isn't really my big concern. The way the roads are being repaired, is leaving no spaces at the side of the road at all, the roads just slope away very steeply at the edges. Looks like they are thinking of drainage, but heck what happens of you have to get out of the way of a wide load? I can see a lot of caravan roll overs happening here, no room for human error at all. Scary stuff.

Thanks Mick (and Leevin), I'll start listening to 29 more often then.
I know the uniden units are fairly cheap quality, we bought ours knowing that, but it does at least get reception etc. Our arial is mainly line of sight, so we dont get a lot of incoming, it's just nice to have it for communication with the big boys when necessary.
We deliberately didnt put a uhf sign on the back of the van Mick, that way we can choose who we talk to and when, without upsetting anyone by appearing ignorant and not replying to calls. Thanks again ;D

Thanks Mick. The other dumb question is about the truckie channel that is for the pacific hwy and Bruce hwy. Where do truckies use that channel instead of 40? Is there a definite change the numbers place?

We have just bought an el cheapo radio for the "new"prado and would love some advice please. I remember reading a post by Mick a long time ago (elsewhere of course), but as languages change so quickly I am wondering what are the current radio terms for coppers, speed guns/cameras, road trains and long/wide loads? Feel free to add any other words that I may have not asked for BUT I do know all the foul language that the truckies are known for, so no need to try to edumicate me there!

Sorry Badge, I'm with Brickus, life is too full of gruesome, real memories without setting out to make some more. I respect your desire to make us more safe, but bugger, we are already paranoid enough.
