Residents urged to leave as Goongerah bushfire becomes emergency ABC
February 2, 2014, 7:30 pm
Some residents in Victoria's Gippsland region have been told to evacuate as an out-of-control bushfire burns in the area.
An emergency warning has been issued for a blaze in the Goongerah area, in Victoria's east.
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) says the fire is travelling in a northerly and easterly direction towards Bonang Road.
There is a concern the fire may impact the town of Goongerah tonight.
The CFA says police will be door-knocking and recommending that people leave.
A relief centre has been established at the Orbost Secondary College.
The CFA has also warned of a high fire danger across Gippsland tomorrow, with very strong winds and high temperatures expected.
"Winds are predicted to strengthen from the north-west during this evening and a south-westerly wind change is expected later tomorrow," said regional fire controller Anthony Costigan said in a statement.
"These winds will be stronger at higher elevations and will be the major driver of fire behaviour."
Bonang Road was closed to traffic between Orbost and Bonang at 6.00pm AEDT.
However, the CFA says the closure will not prevent residents leaving the area.
"While we will have extra resources in and around townships, I strongly urge residents who do not need to be at home tomorrow to consider leaving early," Mr Costigan said.

Houses have been lost as fires threaten several Latrobe Valley towns and Victoria's biggest power stations.
Fire has moved to the edge of the western urban area of Morwell, into plantation areas and impacting on two open cut coalmines.
Some homes about half a kilometre out of Morwell have been lost, incident controller Laurie Jeremiah said.
"We have had some houses burnt. We are yet to confirm occupants, but we have been giving the emergency warnings for a number of hours now, so we hope those people took the appropriate action," Mr Jeremiah said.
Emergency warnings were in place for several Latrobe Valley townships on Sunday evening including Morwell, Driffield, Hazelwood, Glengarry West, Morwell North, Tyers and Yallourn North.
The fires are threatening power stations, open cut mines, plantations and a paper mill.
Authorities say there is a blaze in the Hazelwood open cut coalmine and fire is also around the Yallourn open cut mine.
Fire authorities are also concerned about the Hazelwood Power Station.
"There is one substation that is under threat, so we have a number of resources on that dealing with it, but my understanding is that it is still functional," Mr Jeremiah said.
Latrobe City Council chief executive John Mitchell said the fire on the northern edge of the Hazelwood mine had not reached the coal seams.
"The fire has not got into the coal seams, which would represent a major problem because the Hazelwood Power Station is a 1600-megawatt power station and obviously represents a critical piece of infrastructure in terms of power generation in our state."
Mr Mitchell said the Morwell West fire was threatening towns around Glengarry and Tyers and heading west of the Maryvale paper mill complex and softwood plantation.
"There's a risk that fire could cause more serious concern," he told ABC TV.
At the Yallourn Power Station the fire is burning in grassy areas near the open cut mine.
Morwell, about 150 kilometres from Melbourne, has a population of about 14,000.
About 200 people had registered for relief centres in Traralgon and Morwell by early Sunday evening, about half being residents and the rest people trying to get through the area. Share
